The Eagleman Stag

Ooh… this one I really like. The Eagleman Stag (directed by Mikey Please) is a stop-motion short that tells the story of Peter Eagleman, who’s always lived with a obsessive predisposition towards time. Wonderful art direction, fantastic animation, a really great soundtrack; all this coupled with a well told story whose themes touches on time, subjectivity and even bits of existentialism… It’s pretty easy to see why this short has been recieving overwhelming acclaim of late.

3 Things: Animations

Going for some slightly abstract ones, each of varying medium. First is an animation of the track “Where Did the Night Go?” by Gil Scott-Heron (who I should make a note of checking out more of later).

Second, one in a series of semi-psychedelic watercolour animations by Matt Box based on influential skaters.

And lastly, this fluidly surreal short by Masanobu Hiraoka that evokes several impressions of Masaaki Yuasa films, but wholey unique as well.

3 Things: Twisted Shorts

This time bring you three mildly disturbing (but in many ways brilliant) short films.

3 Things: Animated Shorts

In keeping with the ‘oh hey, I can keep within a theme’ theme of these posts, here’s three animated shorts of varying styles and storytelling methods (but chosen mostly because they’re animated).

The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr Morris Lessmore

Blue Whale by sivan kidron

The Chase by Philippe Gamer

“Wisdom Teeth” by Don Hertzfeldt

I have no idea how this has slipped by me til now, but if you’re even remotely familiar with Don Hertzfeldt, you’ll need little prompting to watch this short film made for Showtime.

And if you’re unfamiliar with his work, than you’re an alien and you need to watch this, this and especially this.

Christmas idents by Treat

Commissioned by E4 to create Christmas idents for them, these 5 shorts by British animation group Treat are short, snappy and unexpectedly awesome.

Tales of Mere Existence

This is a series of animations created by Levni Yilmaz, where the drawings aren’t so much amazing, but the execution and method of an almost stream of conscious narrative makes for some both funny and insightful videos.

Have picked out a few charmers, but check out his Youtube channel for a whole lot more.

The Insect Highway

Another amazing aspect of life on Earth. Recommended.

Animation: PencilHead

Okay, I’m not exactly sure what the whole context is around the making of this animation, but this animation is just mental.  Created by what I assume is all hand drawn, this short somehow manages to reference quite the number of anime and pop culture films and does it quite impressively.
